Passion For Worship

Sermon Title: PASSION FOR WORSHIP

Scripture Text: PSALM 29:3-11

Sermon Series: SUMMER IN THE PSALMS

Sermon Notes:

PSALMS 29:1-11 NIV

1 A psalm of David. Ascribe to the LORD, O mighty ones, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness.
3 The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD thunders over the mighty waters.
4 The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is majestic.
5 The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; the LORD breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, Sirion like a young wild ox.
7 The voice of the LORD strikes with flashes of lightning.
8 The voice of the LORD shakes the desert; the LORD shakes the Desert of Kadesh.
9 The voice of the LORD twists the oaks and strips the forests bare. And in his temple all cry, “Glory!”
10 The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD is enthroned as King forever.
11 The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace.

“I couldn’t help but think about the fact that I really attended two worship services that day. The question I was asking myself was, ‘Which one was I the most passionate about?’”

“Public worship is anything but ordinary. It is not casual or superficial. We are coming together to honor the King of kings.”

PASSION BASED ON TRUTH

“When Christians gather in worship, we are declaring to the world that our hope is in Jesus.”

PASSION FOR GOD’S GLORY

glory | Hebrew: kavod
heavy, weighty

“It is one of the defining marks of our time that God is now weightless. I do not mean by this that he is ethereal but rather that he has become unimportant. He rests upon the world so inconsequentially as not to be noticeable.”

“It’s very easy for us to leave alone the glory of God or to be altogether so used to it that it doesn’t mean anything to us at all.”

Jethani observes this thinking in churches today:
“If our worship gatherings are energetic, stimulating, and exciting enough then people will attend, receive what’s being communicated, and be spiritually transformed.”

GETTING BACK OUR AWE OF GOD:
1. Remember God’s reign (v.10).
2. Rejoice in God’s strength (v.11a).
3. Receive God’s peace (v.11b)

NEHEMIAH 8:10 NIV

Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is sacred to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”

The JOY of the Lord is your strength.
The joy of the Lord is YOUR strength.
The joy of the Lord is your STRENGTH.

The joy OF THE LORD is your strength.

JEREMIAH 6:14 NIV

They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. ‘Peace, peace,’ they say, when there is no peace.

PSALMS 29:11 NIV

The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace.

ROMANS 5:1 NIV

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ

PHILIPPIANS 4:6-7 NIV

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

“Passion is not manufactured. It’s a hunger thing.”
