Sermon Notes:

MARK 1:9-13 ESV

9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens opening and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” 12 The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13 And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.

COLOSSIANS 3:23-24 ESV

23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.

EPHESIANS 1:11 ESV

11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,

Our spiritual inheritance as children of God comes with a purpose. We are not just passive recipients; we are called to live out this inheritance in a way that honors God.

I. BELOVED

EPHESIANS 1:4 NLT

4 Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.

We don’t have to strive for God’s love; we already have it. We don’t have to earn a place in his family; we’ve already been adopted.

God’s love precedes our actions.

“To be a Christian means not only to believe that Christ is who he is but also to believe that I am who he says I am.”

John Ortberg

II. BATTLE

MARK 1:12 ESV

12 The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.

drove | Greek: ekballo
“to cast out, to drive out, to send out, to expel”

In his sovereignty, God leads us to a time of testing.

God doesn’t test us to destroy us; he tests us to strengthen and prepare us.

JOB 23:10 ESV

10 But he knows the way that I take; when he has tried me, I shall come out as gold.

HEBREWS 11:17-18 ESV

17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, 18 of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.”

MARK 1:12 ESV

12 The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.

God doesn’t send us into trials without his presence.

III. BREAKTHROUGH

MARK 1:13 ESV

13 And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.

MATTHEW 4:4 ESV

4 But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

MATTHEW 4:7 ESV

7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

MATTHEW 4:10 ESV

10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’”

“The Word of God is the only sword that can cut through the lies of the enemy and bring victory to your soul.”

A.W. Tozer

Our reliance in the Scriptures is a direct expression of our reliance in God himself.

“A Bible that’s falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn’t.”

Charles H. Spurgeon

You are Beloved.
You are equipped for the Battle.
And you have the promise of Breakthrough
through Christ.
