Sermon Notes:

HEBREWS 1:1-3 NIV

1 In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways,
2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe.
3 The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.
After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

ACTS 17:2-3 NIV

2 As his custom was, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,
3 explaining and proving that the Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead. “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Christ,” he said.

ACTS 18:5 NIV

5 Whean Silas and Timothy came from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself exclusively to preaching, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ.

ACTS 18:28 NIV

28 For he vigorously refuted the Jews in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.

PSALMS 110:4 NIV

4 The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind: “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”

What does it mean that Jesus is our prophet, priest, and king?

JESUS AS PROPHET

JOHN 1:1-3 NIV

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was with God in the beginning.
3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

HEBREWS 1:1-2 NIV

1 In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe.

Jesus is the one who is fully equipped and called to speak for God.

LUKE 14:26-27 NIV

26 If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters--yes, even his own life--he cannot be my disciple. 27 And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

LUKE 24:32 NIV

32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

Jesus didn’t just speak the word of God, he is the Word of God.

As our prophet, Jesus’ role is to speak to us.
Our role is to listen.

MATTHEW 17:5 NIV

5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”

COLOSSIANS 3:16 NIV

16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.

JOHN 10:27 NIV

27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

How do you respond to Jesus’ words? Do you pay attention to him?

JESUS AS PRIEST

HEBREWS 7:27 NIV

27 Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.

HEBREWS 4:17 NIV

16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

As priest, Jesus points us to who he is and what he has done on our behalf.

How do you respond to Jesus’ invitation?

JESUS AS KING

Jesus as king primarily refers to his rule or reign.

REVELATIONS 1:4-5 NIV

4 John, To the seven churches in the province of Asia: Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne,
5 and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood

HEBREWS 1:3 NIV

3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

REVELATIONS 19:11-16 NIV

11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war.
12 His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself.
13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. 14 The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean.
15 Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.” He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty.
16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

As believers, Jesus’ kingship in our lives is both a present and future reality.

MATTHEW 6:33 NIV

33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
