EPHESIANS 1:13-14 NIV

13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,
14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession--to the praise of his glory.

I. THE MINISTRY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FOR THE BELIEVER

JOHN 14:16-17 NIV

16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever--
17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

ACTS 2:1-4 NIV

1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

A. THE HOLY SPIRIT INDWELLS THE CHRISTIAN

ROMANS 8:11 NIV

11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

The residence of God is in the heart of the believer. God is everywhere but he also resides in us.

9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.

B. THE HOLY SPIRIT BAPTIZES THE CHRISTIAN

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is the act of putting a believer into the Body of Christ at the moment of salvation.

1 CORINTHIANS 12:13 NIV

13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body-- whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free--and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is a universal experience for all believers.

GALATIANS 3:26-27 NIV

26 You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

C. THE HOLY SPIRIT SEALS THE BELIEVER

Sealing implies ownership.

2 CORINTHIANS 5:5 NIV

5 Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

Our salvation cannot be lost.

2 TIMOTHY 2:13 NIV

13 if we are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself.
