I. THE MINISTRY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FOR THE BELIEVER
JOHN 14:16-17 NIV
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever--
17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
ACTS 2:1-4 NIV
1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
A. THE HOLY SPIRIT INDWELLS THE CHRISTIAN
EPHESIANS 1:13-14 NIV

ROMANS 8:11 NIV
11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.
The residence of God is in the heart of the believer. God is everywhere but he also resides in us.
ROMANS 8:9 NIV
9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.
B. THE HOLY SPIRIT BAPTIZES THE CHRISTIAN
The baptism of the Holy Spirit is the act of putting a believer into the Body of Christ at the moment of salvation.
1 CORINTHIANS 12:13 NIV
13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body-- whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free--and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
The baptism of the Holy Spirit is a universal experience for all believers.
GALATIANS 3:26-27 NIV
26 You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
C. THE HOLY SPIRIT SEALS THE BELIEVER
EPHESIANS 1:13-14 NIV
13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,
14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession--to the praise of his glory.
Sealing implies ownership.
2 CORINTHIANS 5:5 NIV
5 Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
Our salvation cannot be lost.
2 TIMOTHY 2:13 NIV
13 if we are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself.
ROMANS 6:23 NIV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

II. THE MINISTRY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE BELIEVER
A. WHAT IS THE FILLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT?
EPHESIANS 5:18 NIV
18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.
- The verb that is used for “filled” is plural, implying that all Christians are to be filled.
2. The verb that’s used for “filled” is present tense, meaning it is a repeated action.
ACTS 2:4 NIV
4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
ACTS 4:8 NIV
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: "Rulers and elders of the people!
ACTS 4:31 NIV
31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
3. The verb used for “filled” is passive, implying the filling is something done to you.
4. The verb for “filled” is imperative, implying a command.
B. HOW DO WE KNOW THAT WE ARE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT?

1 PETER 4:10 NLT
10 God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.
2. The manifestation of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)
GALATIANS 5:22-23 NIV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self- control. Against such things there is no law.
Fruit does not pop overnight. It grows.
Being filled with the Holy Spirit is not a matter of more or less. It’s a matter of yes or no.
