God (Part 2)

The doctrine of the Trinity is at the heart of Christian theology. In other words, if there is no Trinity, there is no Christianity!

Sermon Notes:

Three “God is” statements:
I. God is revealed.
II. God is relational.
III. God is a Trinity.

I. GOD IS TRINITY

A. Definition

God is three in one – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. He is not three Gods, nor is he one God acting in three different ways.

B. Why Study the Trinity?

The doctrine of the Trinity is at the heart of Christian theology. In other words, if there is no Trinity, there is no Christianity!

“When I first began to study the Bible years ago, the doctrine of the Trinity was one of the most complex problems I had to encounter. I have never fully resolved it, for it contains an aspect of mystery. Though I do not totally understand it to this day, I accept it as a revelation of God.”

– Billy Graham

The doctrine of the Trinity is not found in any single verse of the Bible. It is found in a study of the whole Bible.

C. Scriptural Evidences of the Trinity

1. God is one

(Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 46:9)

2. Father, Son and Spirit are called God

(Romans 1:7; Titus 2:13; John 20:28; Hebrews 1:8;
John 14:16-17; Acts 5:3-4)

3. The Father, Son and the Spirit are distinct from one another

(John 14:26; John 14:16-17)

D. Three Implications

1. Theologically

Understanding the truth of the Trinity prevents us from adopting inadequate views of God.

2. Personally

a. Without the Doctrine of the Trinity, we cannot trust the Bible.
b. Without the Doctrine of the Trinity, we cannot pray effectively.
c. Without the Doctrine of the Trinity, there would be no salvation from sin.

3. Relationally

(John 3:16; John 17:24; 1 John 4:16; John 13:35)

Even before he created us, there was a perfect relationship between God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

II. GOD IS ABSOLUTELY SOVEREIGN

(Ephesians 1:3-4a; Colossians 1:15-17; John 33:4; Psalms 104:30)

“When you go through a trial, the sovereignty of God is the pillow upon which you lay your head.”

Charles Spurgeon

God is able to be in absolute control and yet also give us genuine choice.

1. He is greater than and exists above his creation. He is transcendent

(1 Kings 8:27; Ephesians 4:6: Psalms 139:2)

2. He never needs permission or help. God is all-sufficient

(Acts 17:25: Romans 9:20)

3.God can do anything he wants. He is almighty

(Psalms 147:4-5)
