New wine is coming—whether we’re ready for it or not. Jesus is always on the move. The only question is, will we be vessels that he can use?
Sermon Title: EMBRACING THE NEW
Sermon Text: MARK 2:18-22 (ESV)
Sermon Series: THE KING HAS COME: THE START OF SOMETHING NEW

Sermon Notes:
MARK 2:18-22 ESV
18 Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. And people came and said to him, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”
19 And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.
20 The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day.
21 No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made.
22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins--and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.”
Jesus didn’t come to give more religion—he came to give himself.
Wedding Feast: Jesus Bring Joy, Not Ritual
Bridegroom | Greek: numphios
ISAIAH 62:5 ESV
5 For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your sons marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you.
2 CORINTHIANS 11:2 ESV
2 I feel a divine jealousy for you, for I betrothed you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ.
Jesus doesn’t want you as a religious follower —he wants you as his beloved.
Jesus didn’t come to invite you into a ritual—he came to invite you into a relationship.
Do we have that joy? Are we truly experiencing life with Jesus, or have we settled for empty rituals?
Jesus didn’t come to weigh you down with more religious expectations. He came to give you himself.
Unshrunk Cloth: Jesus Brings Replacement, Not Patchwork
Jesus won’t be a side dish. He is the meal.
He is not an add-on to our plans. He is the plan.
He’s not a booster to make our lives better. He is the very foundation of life itself.
unshrunk | Greek: agnaphos
“unprocessed, raw”
GALATIANS 5:1 NASB
1 It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
Jesus didn’t come to be an add-on to an old framework—he came to replace it with himself.
Fresh Wineskin: Jesus Brings Newness, Not Restraint
God is doing something new—are we ready for it?
God is not done moving. He is still pouring out new wine.
Where in our lives are we clinging to “old wineskins” mentality? Where have we become resistant to change—not just for the sake of change, but for the sake of what God wants to do?
If you cling too tightly to the old, you might miss out on the new.
New wine is coming—whether we’re ready for it or not. Jesus is always on the move. The only question is, will we be vessels that he can use?
Are you a raft, just floating along, content with the way things are? Or are you a sailboat, catching the wind of the Spirit, ready to go where Jesus leads?
