Sermon Notes:

MATTHEW 19:23-26 NIV

23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?” 26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Don’t let your past failures or your current reality define you. Let God define you.

MATTHEW 19:16 NIV

16 Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?”

MARK 10:17 NIV

17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

MATTHEW 19:17 NIV

17 “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments.”

ROMANS 3:10-11 NIV

10 As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; 11 there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God.

MARK 10:18 NIV

18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good--except God alone.”

MATTHEW 19:17-19 NIV

17 “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments.” 18 “Which ones?” the man inquired. Jesus replied, “‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, 19 honor your father and mother,’ and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’” 20 “All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?”

MATTHEW 19:21 NIV

21 Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

EXODUS 20:3 NIV

3 You shall have no other gods before me.

MATTHEW 19:22 NIV

22 When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.

MATTHEW 19:25 NIV

25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?”

The question the disciples ask is the same question that the rich man began with.

MATTHEW 19:26 NIV

26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, …

The greatest impossibility that’s currently facing you is not the greatest impossibility that has ever faced you.

ROMANS 3:10-12 NIV

10 As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; 11 there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. 12 All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.”

Nothing is ever over when it comes to God.

ROMANS 8:11 NIV

11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

EXAMINE OUR SOURCES OF SECURITY

MATTHEW 19:23-24 NIV

23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

Our sense of security in anything other than God is like a leaky boat —eventually, it will fail.

UNDERSTAND THE LIMITS OF HUMAN EFFORT

In the kingdom of God, human effort and striving always fall short.

TRUST IN THE POWER OF GOD’S GRACE

The power of God’s grace is not something distant; it’s available to you today.
