I Am Thirsty

“Jesus died thirsty, so we’d never have to thirst again.”

Sermon Title: COPING WITH BAD NEWS

Scripture Text: JOHN 14:1-6

Sermon Notes:

JOHN 19:28-29 NIV

28 Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”
29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.

Some suffer much, others suffer less. But do we suffer well?

I. SUFFERING IS A REALITY OF LIFE

JOHN 19:28 NIV

28 Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”

II. THERE ARE NO ACCIDENTS

JOHN 19:28-29 NIV

28 Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”

PSALMS 69:21 NIV

21 They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.

JOHN 19:28-29 NIV

29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.

“With God, there are not accidents, only appointments.”

Are we willing to suffer whatever we need to suffer – whether it be physical hurt, emotional heartache, or spiritual helplessness if that is God’s plan for our life?

III. GOD NEVER WASTES OUR SUFFERING

MARK 15:23 NIV

23 Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.

MATTHEW 27:33-34 NIV

33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull). 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it.

Someone needs to see you suffer well with Jesus. People need to see you clinging to his promises, treasuring his friendship, and praising his name when life is falling in on you. Some may not know how much they need to see you endure because their suffering hasn’t come yet. But it will. And when it comes, they will remember the saints who they have seen suffer well.” -Marshall Segal, desiringgod.org

“Jesus died thirsty so we’d never have to live thirsty.”

JOHN 4:13-14 NIV

13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,
14 but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
