Humility. Contentment. Hope.

Humility. Contentment. Hope.

“God weans us from our dependence on the temporal so that we are not enticed into trusting Him for what He can give but because of who He is.”

Sermon Title: HUMILITY. CONTENTMENT. HOPE

Scripture Text: PSALM 131

Sermon Notes:

PSALMS 131:1-3 ESV

1 A Song of Ascents. Of David.
O LORD, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me.
2 But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me.
3 O Israel, hope in the LORD from this time forth and forevermore.

I. POSTURE OF HUMILITY

PSALMS 131:1 ESV

1 A Song of Ascents. Of David.
O LORD, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me.

PROVERBS 30:13 NASB

13 There is a kind--oh how lofty are his eyes! And his eyelids are raised in arrogance.

“You can either look up to the Lord or look down on other people. But you can’t do both at the same time.”

PSALMS 131:1 ESV

1 A Song of Ascents. Of David.
O LORD, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me.

“If the proud heart has to do with pride in relation to self, and proud eyes has to do with pride in relation to others, the proud walk has to do with pride in relation to God.”

“It takes simplicity and humility to worship God acceptably.”

II. POSTURE OF CONTENTMENT

PSALMS 131:2 ESV

2 But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me.

Weaning is the process of gradually introducing an infant to adult diet while withdrawing the supply of its mother’s milk.

“Until Jesus is enough for us, nothing else will ever be.”

“I asked God for strength, that I might achieve;
I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey.

I asked for health, that I might do greater things;
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things.

I asked for riches, that I might be happy;
I was given poverty, that I might be wise.

I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men;
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God.

I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life;
I was given life, that I might enjoy all things.

I got nothing I asked for, but everything I had hoped for.
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am, among men, most richly blessed.”

III. POSTURE OF HOPE

PSALMS 131:3 ESV

3 O Israel, hope in the LORD from this time forth and forevermore.

“God weans us from our dependence on the temporal so that we are not enticed into trusting him for what he can give but because of who he is.”

PSALMS 131:3 ESV

3 O Israel, hope in the LORD from this time forth and forevermore.

“God is not our last hope. He is our only hope!”

APPLICATION:
I’m thankful for those (things) that I no longer have to have.
