Glory to God, Peace on Earth

Before we can have real peace, our priority should be to glorify God.

Sermon Title: GLORY TO GOD, PEACE ON EARTH

Sermon Text: LUKE 2:14 (NIV)

Sermon Series: SNAPSHOT SCRIPTURES: TIMELESS TRUTHS IN A FEW WORDS

Sermon Notes:

Luke 2:14 NIV

14 Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.

Two important things the angel and the heavenly host declared:

I. Glory to God (John 3:16)

Jesus is the only One who can save us from eternal death and give us eternal life!

He is the only sacrifice God accepts as perfect payment for the wages for our sins.

How do we glorify God? There are a lot of ways, but I believe we can look at 3 ways:

1. We glorify God by our Faith (Romans 4:18-21)

2. We glorify God by our Worship (Psalm 100)

3. We glorify God in All We Do (1 Peter 4:10-11, 1 Corinthians 10:31)

“Soli Deo Gloria” (latin) – Glory to God Alone

Before we can have real peace, our priority should be to glorify God.

II. Peace on Earth (Romans 5:1, Galatians 5:22-23, Philippians 4:4-7)

Peace Gk. eirēnē (ay-RAY-nay), it can mean:

– the stopping of hostilities between two nations

– a treaty that avoids warfare

– settling a conflict between two individuals

– prosperity and well-being that can flourish during a period of peace

Three intertwined areas of peace in our lives:

1. Peace with God

Galatians 5:22-23 NIV

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Romans 5:1 NIV

1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we[a] have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

Philippians 4:4-7 NIV

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

2. Peace of God

Acts 4:32-35 NIV

32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.

Philippians 4:19 NIV

19 And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.

3. Peace with others

John 16:33 NIV

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

We have peace WITH OTHERS because of Jesus!

We have the peace OF GOD because of Jesus!

We have peace WITH GOD because of Jesus!
