Sermon Notes:

JOHN 1:1 NIV

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

1 JOHN 4:2 NIV

2 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God

“The heart of the Christian faith is a person. In a real sense, Christianity is Jesus Christ.”

J. Scott Duvall

Jesus is God and Jesus is Man. He is fully God and fully man.

I. JESUS IS FULLY GOD

1. Jesus said he is God.

JOHN 5:18 NIV

18 For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

JOHN 10:30 NIV

30 I and the Father are one.

JOHN 14:9 NIV

9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?”

JOHN 8:58 NIV

58 I tell you the truth, Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”

EXODUS 3:14 NIV

14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

2. Others said he is God.

ISAIAH 9:6 NIV

6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

ISAIAH 45:22-23 NIV

22 Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other. 23 By myself I have sworn, my mouth has uttered in all integrity a word that will not be revoked: Before me every knee will bow; by me every tongue will swear.

PHILIPPIANS 2:10-11 NIV

10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

COLOSSIANS 2:9 NIV

9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form

TITUS 2:13 NIV

13 while we wait for the blessed hope--the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,

HEBREWS 1:6-8 NIV

6 And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God's angels worship him.” 7 In speaking of the angels he says, “He makes his angels winds, his servants flames of fire.” 8 But about the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom.”

3. He does only what God can and has authority to do.

Jesus received worship & prayer

(Matthew 8:2; Matthew 15:25; Matthew 20;20; Mark 5:6; John 9:38 John 20:28-29; Matthew 14:33; 28:9-10; John 20:28)

ACTS 14:15 NIV

15 Men, why are you doing this? We too are only men, human like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made heaven and earth and sea and everything in them.

He forgave sin (Matthew 9:1-9; Mark 2:1-12).
All judgment is in his hands (John 5:27; Acts 17:31).
He sends the Spirit (John 15:26).
He raised the dead (Mark 5:35-43; John 11:38-45).
He is the creator (Colossians 1:16; Hebrews 1:10).
He upholds all things (Colossians 1:17; Hebrews 1:3).

4. His claims were supported by evidence.

Evidence of prophecies about Jesus.

LUKE 24:44 NIV

44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”

Evidence of Jesus’ miracles.

LUKE 7:20,22 NIV

20 When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?’”
22 So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.”

Evidence of Jesus’ predictions.

JOHN 2:19 NIV

19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”

MATTHEW 12:40 NIV

40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

MARK 8:31 NIV

31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again.

JOHN 10:17-18 NIV

17 “The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life--only to take it up again.
18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”

LUKE 21:24 NIV

24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

5. Desperate father and a dying son (John 14:46-53).

It began with his faith in Jesus’ power

JOHN 4:46-48 NLT

46 As he traveled through Galilee, he came to Cana, where he had turned the water into wine. There was a government official in nearby Capernaum whose son was very sick.
47 When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went and begged Jesus to come to Capernaum to heal his son, who was about to die.
48 Jesus asked, “Will you never believe in me unless you see miraculous signs and wonders?”

It progressed itself as faith in God’s promise

JOHN 4:50 NLT

50 Then Jesus told him, “Go back home. Your son will live!”…

It confirmed itself as faith in Jesus’ person

JOHN 4:51-53 NLT

51 While the man was on his way, some of his servants met him with the news that his son was alive and well.
52 He asked them when the boy had begun to get better, and they replied, “Yesterday afternoon at one o’clock his fever suddenly disappeared!”
53 Then the father realized that that was the very time Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” And he and his entire household believed in Jesus.

“Jesus’ power towards us and his promises to us, are what they are because he is who he is!”
