Sermon Title: HOLY SPIRIT: GOD WITH US AND IN US

Scripture Text: JOHN 14:16-17

Sermon Series: HERE I STAND: BUILDING A STRONG FAITH

Sermon Notes:

JOHN 14:16-17 ESV

16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,
17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

“Life is very much like skiing downhill totally blind.”

JOHN 13:33 ESV

33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’

JOHN 14:2-3 ESV

2 In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.

JOHN 14:12 ESV

12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.

JOHN 16:7 ESV

7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.

“We are better off today having the Spirit inside us than having Jesus physically beside us.”

EPHESIANS 4:30 ESV

30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

II. We have a permanent relationship with the Holy Spirit.

16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,

PSALMS 51:11 ESV

11 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.

“The residence of God is in the believer. Yes, God is everywhere but he also resides in us.”

III. We have a present relationship with the Holy Spirit

JOHN 14:16-17 ESV

16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

EPHESIANS 1:13-14 ESV

13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,
14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

“At the point of your faith, you automatically receive the Holy Spirit.”

“The Holy Spirit does not just give us eternal life for the world to come, he also gives us spiritual life to live victoriously in the world that we are in.”

“It is no good giving me a play like Hamlet or Romeo and Juliet and telling me to write a play like that.
Shakespeare could do it;
I can’t.

It is no good showing me a life, like the life of Jesus, and telling me to go live a life like that.
Jesus could do it;
I can’t.

If the genius of Shakespeare could come and live in me, then I could write plays like his.
If the Spirit of Jesus could come and live in me, then I could live a life like His.”
