“Only one person in history never left behind any unfinished business and that is our Lord, Jesus Christ.”
Sermon Title: THE BORROWED TOMB
Scripture Text: JOHN 19:30
Sermon Notes:
JOHN 19:30 NIV
30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
“When you begin to live like you are dying, you can’t live the same way you used to.”
Tetelestai – “It is finished”
I. FINISH THE WILL OF GOD
JOHN 4:34 NIV
34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.”
JOHN 5:30 ESV
30 I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.
JOHN 6:38 ESV
38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.
LUKE 22:42 NIV
42 Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.
“The effect of the saying is that Jesus, facing the temptation to avoid the path of suffering appointed by God, nevertheless accepts the will of God despite his own desire that it might be otherwise. He does not seek to disobey the will of God, but longs that God’s will might be different. But even this is to be regarded as temptation, and it is overcome by Jesus.” — NIGTC (I. Howard Marshall)
“Following Christ will cost you; not following him will cost you more.”
“Success must be defined by God.”
II. FINISH THE WORK OF GOD
JOHN 17:4 NIV
4 I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.
“The greatest life that ever lived ended with the greatest death that ever died and finished the greatest work that was ever given.”
“While the will of God costs us, the work of God should consume us.”
1 CORINTHIANS 15:58 NIV
58 Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
